The Price of Peace of Mind – DeCurtis Shield™ ROI

Practically every business is adopting some form of temperature screening as edge mitigation. Those methodologies range from digital oral thermometers and temporal scanners to thermographic cameras and kiosks.

One of the concerns often raised is the cost of kiosks. Like any purchase, prices vary significantly based on quality, availability, reliability and extensibility. If you have followed us for any period of time, you know we are not a hardware company.

Author’s Note: This line scared some of our internal team members and triggered some of my old Microsoft friends who, like me, have countless Microsoft Hardware innovations that got orphaned by a company not dedicated to hardware. That is not what I am saying. At DeCurtis, we only produce hardware when the market does not meet our client’s needs. That is how DeCurtis Shield™ came to be. We create hardware if nobody else has, but we do it with the platform in mind. If newer, better or less expensive options evolve, they can report to our robust platform and be used in harmony with our hardware.

Using the highest quality thermographic cameras which operate on frequencies allowing them easy use across the globe, layering in artificial intelligence and cutting-edge facial identification to ensure accurate readings and future integration with facial recognition while also creating a software framework that allows integration to a holistic edge mitigation strategy is not an easy path.

It is, however, the right path.

So, what does that mean to you? The best way to understand is by example. Here is a simple tool to assess the return on investment (ROI) of our Shield Kiosk versus a labor-centric approach using other hardware like temporal scanners. Enter the number of Shield Kiosks you are planning to deploy on the left and the number of staff that you would be leveraging to accomplish similar end results (with the caveats we will point out below) to see how fast you will recoup this investment.

A Cruise Terminal

Here is an example for a cruise line operating at an owned terminal. They have one primary entrance for guests and one for visitors and crew. To speed screening, they have opted for additional units but to make the ROI more painful, the example will align a crew member to each kiosk (this is not required). They are looking to leverage DeCurtis Shield™ to:

  • Extend the ‘veil’ of safety to an area before there is a more complicated layout that hinders physical distancing.
  • Allow for rapid assessment of temperature in a safe and recorded fashion
  • Offer this same capability to the entry for crew and visitors

For the sake of simplicity, this example will consider four kiosks and align four resources.

DeCurtis Shield ROI Example 1

As you can see, this model only assumes usage of the kiosk for Embarkation and Disembarkation Day in each week and loads the cost model. The payback is still rapid (16 weeks)

Healthcare Facility

Here is an example for a hospital or medical facility. They have four primary entrances for guests and four for visitors and staff.

For the sake of simplicity, this example will consider eight kiosks and align eight resources.

DeCurtis Shield ROI Example 2

Notice the rapid ROI. In this example, the entries and exits are open 24 hours per day. This results in an accelerated ROI.

Overview

As you can see, the payback period is astonishingly short and that is using the most conservative and simplistic model we could fashion. While it may seem logical to use inexpensive, handheld temporal temperature devices, they create a few critical challenges:

  • Reduces the speed of your entry/exit process
  • Introduces potential for human error
  • Typically leads to no recording of data (nor the ability to record)
  • Eliminates the ability to integrate your edge mitigation approach to a more holistic strategy
  • It generally aligns one staff member to one entry point (linear cost scale)

And most of all:

• That approach puts one of your team members very close to persons of an unknown state and therefore, at greater risk
